Situated on high ground overlooking the Grand Shaft this battery was used not only in Napoleonic times but also in World War One and Two. It commands unrivalled views of the harbour and town and was reached from the Grand Shaft by means of steps known as St Martin's Steps. Many of these have survived and can still be used.

(St Martin is the patron saint of Dover).
