Dover: Lock and Key of the Kingdom

Dover Census

The census of population has been carried out every 10 years since 1801. The only exception to this was during the Second World War when the 1941 Census did not take place. In 1903 River was incorporated into the Borough of Dover and included in the totals after that.  In 1971 the Borough of Dover became part of Dover District Council and the boundaries changed.  For the figures from 1981 I have  tried to approximate as closely to the old Borough figures by adding the population figures of the town wards  of Dover to the figures  for River. Below are the population totals for Dover.
