During the First World War the newly completed Admiralty Harbour played host to the Dover Patrol. The harbour was also the place where many soldiers left British soil for the last time, and after the war was the landing place for the body of the Unknown Warrior. War came to the civilian population for the first time and Dover had the dubious honour of having the first bomb dropped on England just before Christmas 1914.
