Dover: Lock and Key of the Kingdom

Dover in the First World War

A military control point on a road leading into Dover during the First World War.
During the First World War the newly completed Admiralty Harbour  played host to the Dover Patrol. The harbour was also the place  where many soldiers left British soil for the last time, and after the  war was the landing place for the body of the Unknown Warrior. War came to the civilian population for the first time and Dover had  the dubious honour of having the first bomb dropped on England  just before Christmas 1914.   To find out more about Dover’s part in this world changing conflict  of a century ago, click on the links in the bottom right hand corner.
